On January 1, 2003 the org registry operations were transferred to the Public Interest Registry.

To perform ORG domain whois lookups you will need to use whois.publicinterestregistry.net as the whois server. This comes into effect from 27th January 2003.

The registration data for ORG domains originally in resided separate, publicly accessible registrar databases. However these have been moved to a single authoritative database.

ORG Domain History

The ORG top level domain (TLD) was created in 1984 along with the original .COM, .NET, .GOV, .EDU and .MIL. It is an "open" and "unrestricted" top level domain and anyone can register a .ORG. However it is normally used by nonprofit organization.
